Community

This category in the Tarbuton blog is designed to provide information for connecting with the Israeli community in San Diego.  And for connecting as a community around Israel.

CISD - Community of Israelis in San Diego

I have started volunteering my time with a group locally trying to build a home away from home for Israelis in San Diego.  The Board is made up of some really wonderful people and we’re working on plans for new programs, events, etc.

I just completed the web site and we’ve done our best to highlight all current Israeli programming in town.  Visit the site at: http://www.sdisrael.com

If you’re thinking of moving to San Diego this is a great site to get a feel for what’s happening in town for Israelis.  We hope to have a welcome kit for newcomers shortly and a Directory as well as other offerings.

Israeli Dancing

There are several places to go in town:

Jewish Academy, Carmel Valley: Yoni Carr, 760-631-0802, yonic@cox.net - http://www.israelidancing.com/

Hillcrest Area: 30th and Adams - http://www.dancewithdalya.com/

Sapri Li - Story Time in Hebrew

Moms read 3 stories in Hebrew each week. (You don’t need to know Hebrew, but need to know we will be speaking in Hebrew.) Books are for pre-school age, 10-12 pages.

Meets in Carmel Valley the 2nd and 4th Wednesday each month at 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm.  Descriptions of the books are e-mailed so English speakers can prepare their children.  English speakers can expect to pick up a few Hebrew words each time.  Books will be read again in subsequent meetings for repetition.

Includes songs and a coloring/sticker project as well.  Use the link to join the Yahoo group for meeting times and reminders of the books.

Kishkushim - Baby Group

This group meets on Thursdays at 10:00 am and is for babies to pre-school age. (Disclaimer: this group is one of mine as well) The meetings are play time for the kids, relaxing time for the Moms. A traditional playgroup, just with conversation in Hebrew. We have Mom’s Night Out and family events as well. Meetings are held in member homes and/or local parks.

You can join the yahoo group to get reminders of the meeting and locations. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/kishkushim/

The group has women from all over the County, Encinitas, Carmel Valley, La Jolla/UTC and more. Its a wonderful group of women and a great place to get advice on parenting, doctors, etc. We’ve even had a few women join us early when they’re pregnant.

San Diego Young Judaea

This group was founded a few years ago and the young Israelis who run the group and its activities are energetic and fun. They are doing their best to service the community with activities for older kids. The programs are run in English. But, my hope is that they’ll work with us to create Hebrew speaking programs as well.

There are a lot of Israeli families participating in these groups City wide. The focus is a fun, often outdoors, celebration of Israel and its a great way for 3rd-12th graders to learn about Jewish and Israeli culture with friends.

San Diego Israel on Google

This group is maintained I believe by someone in UTC living near what people call the “Kibbutz” in town, though I’m not 100% sure. A great way to connect with Israelis in San Diego.

Tapuzim - Yahoo Group for Israelis in San Diego

This list was started by the Young Judea folks when they arrived in town. The list is open to the public so there is some spam that comes through here. But, otherwise its a good way to connect with Israelis in San Diego.
