ulpan san diego - Tarbuton

We will have 3-4 groups of adults this Fall 2009 learning Hebrew in an Ivrit b’Ivrit format in San Diego through the Tarbuton.  Parents with children learning Hebrew in their own classrooms at the same hour, will be learning in an Israeli ulpan program through the Tarbuton the same hour.  Other adults will join them to round out the classes.

Our goal is to offer a cultural, Israel centric and ivrit b’ivrit format.  The intent is for the program to provide both a community to engage with that is working towards developing their language skills and supplement the course work with the social programs where they can use them too.

Learn Hebrew Pod - Podcast Hebrew Lessons

Ran across this site today and think its an interesting choice.  They have some free podcasts for download too.  I had to laugh - they teach the way I talk -  The 1/2 in English, 1/2 in Hebrew.  I love this though because for me - it shows me the way to conjugate the verb - you hear it, then they reinforce it.  For some it might be too distracting to hear the english though.

http://www.learnhebrewpod.com/ is their web site.

http://www.learnhebrewpod.com/search.asp?type=tag&phrase=intermediate&order=ASC  has the intermediate classes - you can hear the gist of them with samples there.

HaUlpan San Diego

This Ulpan is offered by San Diego local Yehudit HaLevy. She is a long time educator who has worked in many local schools and been involved in drafting curriculum as well.  She teaches a formal Ulpan - Israeli style.  But, also offers multiple programs connected to Judaism and Religion including assisting with conversion for those who may be seeking such things.

I have met Yehudit and she has a sincere love for teaching and enthusiasm for sharing Hebrew and Israel with the community.  I have not participated in her programs but share her web site with you here.

Language Door - Hebrew San Diego

June 5, 2007

Adult Ulpan

Language Door, a company that offers language instruction of many kinds, now has an instructor here in San Diego.  Ami Dalyot is teaching Hebrew for adults in the Mission George Rd location. There is a text and a recommendation of a CD and/or Cassette for practice.

I don’t have any personal experience with this course or the instructor.  But, you can read more on their web site.  Click here.

Contact Ami Dalyot at: 619-462-8155 for more details or to ask him questions about his methodology.

Class size is small: 2-8 students in a class.

I Study Hebrew.com

This is another online option for Ivrit for adults and children.  I don’t have any experience with this program, but it appears to be a synchronous (live) program like Hebrew Online providing you the opportunity to engage with the professor and other students live during your class.  I really believe this method is ideal.  Seems worth checking out.  The link below takes you to the class information.

Learn Hebrew

This site has an interesting set of categories of words you can learn including some critical phrases for the adult who has some knowledge but needs to fill in some vocabulary.  For example, there is a section on business terminology (like market size, revenue, etc.) and economics.

http://www.learn-hebrew.co.il/

The site is well done with a blox that lets you click on the word to hear its pronunciation and phoenetic as well as hebrew spellings are visible.  The author has done a variety of other interesting sites for English and Spanish too.  Its worth checking out in the About section.

Another one of his that is great is for Hebrew verbs: http://www.hebrew-verbs.co.il

What I love about the verb site is it conjugates the verb for you and also lets you hear the conjugated variations.

Ulpan San Diego

January 3, 2007

Adult Ulpan

I came into contact originally with Professor Zev bar-Lev, SDSU, and his colleague Alana Shuster when I was hunting for hebrew teachers for the Ivrit B’Ivrit program we started in Carmel Valley for our pre-school kids.  They have a rather unique method of teaching language.

Since then, I’ve received e-mails in transliterated hebrew from several people enrolled in the program.  I’m really impressed with the progress of the adults who are taking these classes and all I can say is Kol Ha Kavod to the instructors and the participants.  Its really a wonderful thing.

For those reasons, while I don’t have personal experience with either the instructors or the classes I recommend this Ulpan if you want to learn Hebrew and are living in San Diego and you don’t mind a rather unusual but seemingly effective approach.

Hebrew Online

When I wanted to improve my own Hebrew, I turned to an online program, Hebrew Online, run out of Israel. The teachers were terrific, the program is solid. The program is synchronous learning: you log into the class at a designated time at your PC, the other classmates do as well from around the world. The instructor can be heard live, you respond live, and class is as if it were live: you will read, you will converse, you will be called on. http://www.hebrewonline.com

Class material is relevant. Articles from the paper are used, songs, classic stories. The teacher uses a powerpoint like screen in the classroom software to share slides when needed. Follow up homework is provided to help reinforce new vocabulary. Conversation is a key componant of the class as well to get you speaking and not just reading or writing.

I really enjoyed this experience. They are a class act. You take an online test to determine your level. That is followed up by a phone call from them to confirm what they think is the right level for you. They then place you in a class.

You have to pay for the full session which feels like a lot of $$. However, during my session it amounted to about $25/class which is reasonable for good instruction.
